Sings Like Hell Series #20

Fall/Winter 2006-07

Saturday, October 21

Kevin Welch, Kieran & Lucas Kane and Fats Kaplin + Michael Fracasso

www.deadreckoningrecords.com
www.michaelfracasso.com

Musicians, songwriters and old friends, when Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch sit down together, the room is instantly engulfed in a softly glowing bonhomie.  Not a raging, giddy friendship - something more insidious, a bit sinister.  Deeper.  It’s a glow stoked by fast-flying sarcasm and the musical way they complete one another’s sentences...joined now by multi-instrumentalist

Fats Kapilin and percussionist Lucas Kane (from a very good family) who flavor the gumbo with just the right spice. A particularly insightful songwriter, Michael Fracasso is quietly fierce, with an extraordinary voice: a high, bright tenor that can drive a song or float through it.  He can break your heart or stir your soul with the only kind of performance he knows how to give: intense.

Saturday, November 18
Sonny Landreth Band + Eugene Edwards

www.sonnylandreth.com
www.johnhoskinson.com/eugene/

Grammy nominated Sonny Landreth has always been inspired by the blues: simple, direct, inspired...and translated by a sterling kick-ass band that cannot be matched. He’s the favorite guitar player for John Hiatt and many others, but his own songs are legendary. His songwriting is inspired by the Delta and the swamps that surround Louisiana... and the Road, the Road, The Road We’re On..

Eugene Edwards has the biggest buzz in the power-pop world right now, with a delicious twist that is all his own.  Based out of LA, Edwards can best be described as the love child of Elvis Costello and Marshall Crenshaw. He has the driving power pop sound of EC circa his late 70s classics, and Crenshaw's gift for melody and traditional pop song structures.

Saturday, December 9
Zane Williams Trio + Brett Dennen

www.zanewilliams.com
www.brettdennen.com
Zane Wiliams hits just the right blend of rootsy integrity and mainstream appeal.  Like a modern day Jim Croce, he proves it is possible to be both unique and universal.  After six y
ears touring as a solo artist in the college/coffeeehouse market and armed with a stellar new CD of award-winning songs (including the John Lennon Songwriting Award), Zane is ready for his introduction to the wider world of acoustic folk and country music.

Brett Dennen has a distinctive voice and very personal songs, delivered with a rare self-possession. “Rarely does music come along so unadorned, so pure in spirit and so eloquently written.” Chris Douridas, KCRW Saturday,

January 20, 2007

Elliott Brood + Ana Egge Trio
www.elliottbrood.ca
www.anaegge.net

Elliott Brood play dark, gritty folk and howling bluegrass music built around whiskey-drenched vocals and lyrics evoking images of love, loss and murder.  In their soul-thumping songs, banjo keeps time to a strange and chunky angular stomp, with Kentucky-hardcore acoustic guitar and somber, achingly confessional vocal harmonies.  “Elliott Brood does for pre-war folk music what the White Stripes and Black Keys do for blues.”

Ottawa Sun Ana Egge has raised the bar on her own excellent game....a slew of new, musically intricate and poetic songs, even better playing on her self-made acoustic  guitar...and a pair of fantastic players at her side to bring the songs quietly, compellingly home.

Saturday, February 17
Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus of Dreams + Jeffrey Foucault

www.slambovia.com
www.jeffreyfoucault.com

Imagine a band that mixes 25 years of rock’n’roll with a dash of folk and a pinch of Americana. Stir with creativity, season with talent and the result is a refreshing revival of what makes you listen to music in the first place.Gandalf Murphy is a BIG surprise.

Jeffrey Foucault incorporates the best of the Americana, alt-country and roots-rock genres. There are echoes of The Boss and the best of the Texas Troubadours, like Joe Ely, but there’s nothing derivative. Foucault’s haunting allusions and evocative musicianship underscore undeniable fundamental truths, reminiscent of the finest Dust Bowl anthems.

Saturday, March 24
Greg Brown + Special Guest

www.trailer-records.com

Greg’s music is an intricate mix.  His insightful lyrics paint powerful and often deceptively simple images on a canvas of gospel, blues, country, rock, and jazz.  He’s played in Hell twice before, but it’s been way, way too long.

Audience Feedback

Subject: Jackson/David/Kiko
Hi Peggy,
Greetings from SLO county.  This email is a few weeks late but better late than never.  I was one of the handful of folks camped out in front of the box office hoping that a few tickets would materialize
for the show.  I just wanted to let you know that it was greatly appreciated that you took the time to pop out of the box office and let us know the status of potential tickets.  It was a simple gesture but we all appreciated hearing it from you.  Also, there was a couple in line visiting Santa Barbara from Chicago.  Her 50th birthday was coming up and ALL she wanted for her birthday was to see the show.  Lo and behold, she and her husband got tickets.  It was pretty cool and a wonderful way for her to spend her birthday.  They loved the reception afterwards too.  Just wanted to pass it on...... Thanks for everything and I'll be back to hell in the future. Take care,
Scott

Subject: What a gift!!!
Last nights show with Jackson Browne, David Lindley and Kiko Veneno was amazing. What a passionate and extraordinary musical journey! I hope SLH will be around for my son to enjoy.  He is two and has already taken a liking to the acoustic guitar.
Thanks again.

Peggi,

The Kevin Welch-Kieran Kane show was amazing. What other venue can a member of the audience actually meet and converse with the artists? Reilly and Jan introduced themselves and were very hospitable, great to meet music fans....and we really liked the Westerly Vineyards wines...also it was a pleasure to meet you!

Keep up the great work, we will be back,
