ellions,
Sings Like Hell is now in it's tenth year of presenting the greatest
music you've never heard. We have created a space where genuinely
talented singer-songwriters can perform their art in the presence
of an appeciative, intelligent audience in a beautiful, historic theatre...in
Santa Barbara. In reality, it's a monthly musical pot-luck party for
our 600 closest friends!
Sings Like Hell is an example of a community taking control of its
own musical destiny. We've said this a hundred times before...no matter
which artist is presented, every audience is built from local people
going to a local box office one at a time and buying a ticket to a
show that they have been turned onto by their friends. In the case
of Sings Like Hell, this series has been built by the subscribers, confidently
buying series tickets for artists they've never heard of and convincing
their friends to do likewise.
The benefits to subscribers of discovering new, passionate music include
the chance to meet and talk with the artists after each performance,
getting the same seat to each show, and having the opportunity to
buy tickets to higher-profile concerts when we are able to book them...like
Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss.
The benefits to Sings Like Hell include having a base of loyal subscribers,
which allows us to budget for shows that are more artistically interesting
and financially risky. We have also found that subscribers often become
donors and sponsors, allowing the series to grow along the lines of
attraction and affection, rather than having to be focused exclusively
on the bottom line.
As Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times wrote recently, "Sings
Like Hell...feels like a valuable oasis in the middle of a pop scene
too often dominated by spectacle."
Thanks for discovering Sings Like Hell. Come back often and bring
your friends!
Warm regards,
Peggie Jones, Anne & Hale Milgrim, Rob & Ellen Raede, Jodie
& Bruce Willard
